En 1959, el psiquiatra Dr. Alan Stone trata a un paciente esquizofrénico que está convencido que es Jesucristo. No dispuesto a usar la terapia de electroshock propia de esa época, el médico comienza un experimento sin precedentes y arriesgado transfiriendo a su paciente a vivir con otros dos esquizofrénicos, que, casualmente, también creen que son Jesús.
